Proposal

This film seeks to explore the concepts of metamorphosis and anthropomorphism in its treatment of human emotion, and societal pressure.  The exploration of such topics has lead to a more surrealist style of animation, without a linear progression of story.  As the film is intended to use my own voice, and portrays my own perceptions and exploration of identity to some degree, this film draws from ideas of autobiographical documentary animation.  The concept of vulnerability and its role within our lives comes from the work of Brene Brown who researches shame and vulnerability - it thus also plays with the boundaries of the documentary genre in that it contains universal concerns about our place within society and our interactions and existence as people.  This animation, in exploring form and place, experiments with space and symbolism.  John Grierson said that 'documentary is the creative treatment of actuality', and although this animation doesn't strictly meet the criteria to be labelled a documentary according to many authors, it is definitely informed by many of its conventions and intentions, and seeks to push the conventional boundaries of what documentary has been.

The following pages seek to outline the concept of this animation in more detail.
